TUBO is a contemporary reinterpretation of the ashtray, a small everyday object with a long design history behind it. The reference is Bruno Munari's Cubo, designed in the 1950s: TUBO replaces the sharp geometry of the cube with the softness of a pure cylinder, a shift from rigidity to openness.
The object is made of a matte polyurethane resin shell, open on one side, with a press-formed mirrored steel sheet inserted inside. Matte against gloss, warmth against industrial clarity. It reveals only what it chooses to show, and keeps the rest to itself.
TUBO does not intend to replace Cubo. It stands beside it, as a statement of its own. And although it begins as an ashtray, it stays open to reinterpretation: a container, a presence, a sculptural object.
The first drop, a limited edition of 100 pieces, was released on 17 April 2024 during Milan Design Week, inside a temporary gallery set up in a former tailor's workshop. The evening was more than a product release. Alongside the handover of the pre-ordered pieces, the space hosted an exhibition of graphic works produced for the occasion and a selection of furniture and design objects by Chroma, with a live set by Zegae wsg BEPP.
In a world that needs curves more than edges, TUBO takes its place as a contemporary design object.
